WEA - ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY WALKS

A programme of walks to provide learning through healthy and enjoyable activity.
Local environment and environmental issues are discussed during the walks.

All walks are on Thursday mornings starting (normally) at 10 am and finishing around 1 to 2 pm.

Each walk is about 4 to 6 miles in length. Group members need to have suitable clothing and footwear, particularly for wet weather. 1:25000 Ordnance Survey maps and Silva compass are used and appropriate skills developed. Members are invited to lead some walks and to suggest interesting different walks. All members are encouraged to comment on things of interest and to keep a record of the walks.

Environmental Study Areas

In 1998/99 we walked in several different areas - the valleys of the Derwent and its tributaries, the Dove and Manifold, some of the Don and its tributaries, the Gritstone Edges, Kinder Scout and a few areas east of the A61 road. We have touched upon many things - such as Ordnance Survey maps archaeology flora geology geomorphology local history transport etc. During 2000/2001 it is proposed that we should go into a few of these topics a bit more deeply. How should this be achieved? A 'project' thought desirable for us to undertake is a survey of the conditions of the footpaths we walk along. Feedback on these proposals would be appreciated.
